How to turn a picture into a drawing

  1. Choose a photoAny JPG, PNG or WebP photo from your phone or computer; iPhone photos work too. Faces, pets, houses and flowers all work, and a plain background gives the cleanest lines.
  2. Pick a stylePencil sketch keeps the light and shade of the photo. Line art keeps only the outlines. Coloring page draws bold lines on white, ready for crayons.
  3. Adjust it and downloadDrag the pencil across the picture to compare drawing and photo, set the detail and darkness, then save a PNG or a print-ready PDF in US Letter or A4.

Three drawing styles from one photo

Here is what each style does with the same picture, using the default settings. Every image below was made by this page.

Pencil sketch

The sketch style uses a classic photo-editing trick: it compares each part of the photo with a blurred copy of itself, so edges turn into graphite strokes and flat areas fade to paper. Faces and fur keep their shading, which makes it the most “drawn by hand” of the three. Turn up Darkness for a heavy 6B look, or down for a light sketch.

Line art

Line art comes from an open-source AI model trained to draw the way people do: it traces the outlines that carry meaning, such as the edge of a cheek or the curve of an ear, and leaves out texture and shadow. Use it for tracing, painting over, embroidery patterns or anything else that needs clean contours.

Coloring page

The coloring page style starts from the same AI line drawing, then removes loose specks, joins strokes into closed shapes and makes every line solid black so it prints crisply. For small children, lower the detail and raise the line thickness; there is a full guide on the photo to coloring page page.

Why your photo stays on your device

Many picture-to-drawing sites send your photo to a server, run it through an image model there and send a drawing back. DrawMyPhoto does all of the work in your browser instead. The sketch filter is a few hundred lines of code that run instantly; the line-art model is downloaded once and runs with WebAssembly, the same technology browsers use for games and video editors.

That matters when the photo is of your children, your home or someone who did not ask to be online. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can leak, be reused for training or sit on a server somewhere. You can check: once the page and the model have loaded, you can switch off Wi-Fi and keep drawing. The details are in our privacy policy.

Tips for a better drawing

  • Crop first. The subject should fill most of the frame. A small face in a big landscape becomes a tiny drawing.
  • Light from the side. Soft window light gives faces shape. Flash photos look flat, and backlit photos lose detail in the subject.
  • Plain backgrounds win. A wall, the sky or a blanket behind your subject keeps the drawing about the subject, not the clutter.
  • Use the sliders. If the sketch looks busy, lower Detail. If lines look faint on paper, raise Darkness or Line thickness.
  • Print in black and white. The drawings are grayscale, so choosing black-and-white printing saves color ink without changing anything.

What people make with it

Parents turn party photos into coloring pages for the kids at the table. Teachers make a page from each student’s photo for the first week of school. Pet owners frame a sketch of the dog. Crafters use line art as a pattern for embroidery, wood burning, painting or cake decorating. And plenty of people simply like seeing a familiar photo as a drawing; it makes you look at it again.

Questions people ask

Is DrawMyPhoto free?

Yes. Every style, every slider and every download is free, with no account and no watermark on the drawing. Printable PDFs carry one small line in the bottom margin that says they were made with drawmyphoto.com.

Do you upload or keep my photos?

No. Your photo is opened by your own browser and drawn on your own device. It is never sent to our servers, so there is nothing for us to keep, see or delete.

Which photos make the best drawings?

One clear subject, good light and a plain background. A close-up of a face or a pet works better than a crowd. Busy backgrounds such as grass or leaves turn into a lot of small strokes; lower the detail slider to quiet them.

Can I print the drawing?

Yes. The PDF downloads are sized for US Letter and A4 with half-inch margins, and they turn landscape automatically for wide photos. Print at 100% or “fit to page” on plain paper.

Why does line art take a few seconds the first time?

Line art and coloring pages are drawn by a small AI model that runs inside your browser. The first time, your browser downloads it (about 8 MB) and keeps it, so later photos only take the drawing time, usually one to three seconds.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iPhone, Android and computers. On older phones without enough memory for the AI model, line art and coloring pages fall back to a faster filter and the page tells you so.
